Overview
This continuing education activity explores the ethical dimensions of public health interventions and their impact on clinical care. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, clinicians are encountering increasing patient mistrust, treatment refusals, and avoidance of care—often without a clear understanding of the broader public health dynamics contributing to these challenges. Through interdisciplinary presentations by nationally recognized experts in clinical ethics and public health, this session will examine the ethical principles that guide population-level health strategies, including questions of trust, transparency, coercion, and communication. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how public health ethics intersects with clinical practice and will develop the competence needed to engage patients more effectively in a time of polarized public discourse and eroding institutional trust.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify key ethical principles that guide public health interventions and distinguish them from clinical ethics principles
  2. Analyze how communication strategies, including public health “messaging,” can impact trust, transparency, and patient behavior in clinical settings.
  3. Apply ethical reasoning to evaluate coercive public health measures (e.g., mandates) and their potential consequences for clinician–patient relationships.
