Overview
Dr. Philip Rosoff MD and Dr. Autumn Fiester PhD will each discuss ethical challenges in healthcare when violent situations arise. There will be discussion related to bias and lack of information that may lead patients and families to lose trust in the medical institutions. End of life care and the lack of agreement for treatment that leads to conflict will also be discussed. Both speakers are well versed in teaching and handling complex ethical issues in healthcare and medical school training.


Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Describe case situations that escalated with a family member or patient related to differing opinions of medical treatment options.
  2. Describe legal and cultural issues that arise related to escalations during end-of-life care.
  3. Define strategies for working with patients and families for conflict resolution.
  4. Demonstrate decision making related to conflict in code status.

Accreditation
Spectrum Health Hospitals is accredited by the Michigan State Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
