Overview

Release Date: October 29, 2025

Despite updated guidelines, many physicians remain unaware or inconsistently apply the expanded eligibility criteria for annual lung cancer screening using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT). The revised recommendations aim to identify more individuals at risk and reduce lung cancer mortality by detecting disease at earlier, more treatable stages. Gaps persist in clinical practice including under-recognition of eligible patients due to outdated knowledge of screening criteria; lack of routine risk assessment for smoking history and age during patient visits; insufficient shared decision-making conversations, which are now a required component of screening referrals, especially for Medicare beneficiaries; and limited integration of smoking cessation counseling alongside screening discussions. These clinical gaps contribute to missed opportunities for early detection and intervention in high-risk populations. Addressing this gap through targeted education, workflow integration, and team-based approaches is essential to improve adherence to screening guidelines and reduce lung cancer-related morbidity and mortality

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Review updated national screening guidelines.
  2. Discuss benefits and risks of screening high-risk patients.
  3. Identify patient-centered communication strategies to promote lung cancer screening for high-risk patients.
