Overview
For many members of the majority culture in the United States, being made aware of one’s classification as linked to privilege is likely not a common or welcomed experience. Recognizing that you have privilege does not require feeling guilty for your privilege. Rather it is an essential step toward understanding how that privilege might shape your views or negatively affect others, even unintentionally, and what steps we can take to break down barriers created. A Privilege Walk looks at social privileges that benefit some individuals over others. The Privilege Walk activity helps develop self-awareness and improve the ways participants relate to others — while encouraging them to consider how empathy and inclusivity can create positive changes in their club or district.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss privilege and identify areas of privilege in our own lives.
  2. Describe the ways that we can have both privilege and oppression simultaneously.
  3. Examine the false hierarchy of human value perpetuated in the US culture and how it can impact the way that we treat each other and patients.
  4. Practice discussing and listening to others as we examine our identities together.
