Overview
The DeVos Medical Ethics Colloquy in its upcoming Fall 2024 session focuses on the dilemmas faced by healthcare professionals when their ethical commitments come into conflict with legal requirements. This session offers an in-depth examination of the challenges that arise in the overlap of ethics and law in medical practice. Over the course of two hours, the colloquy will feature discussions led by two leading experts in the field. The first speaker, a physician well-versed in areas of medicine where laws are evolving, will share insights on navigating between ethical demands and legal constraints. The second speaker, an academic, will explore whether ethical practices in healthcare should be limited by legality. This event will provide a comprehensive exploration of these pressing issues, aiming to deepen the understanding of ethical conflicts in the healthcare sector.

Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify common scenarios in medical practice where legal obligations and ethical duties conflict, enhancing the ability to navigate these dilemmas.
  2. Develop strategies for advocating for ethical practices in healthcare settings that may be legally ambiguous or challenging.
  3. Engage in detailed analysis of case studies where ethical and legal standards diverge, promoting critical thinking and practical problem-solving skills.
  4. Examine different philosophical perspectives on the weight of legal authority in ethical decision-making within medical practice.
