Putting it Together: Drug Screening and the Patient with Substance Use

This module is intended to meet the requirements for DEA licensure renewal. This activity will provide an overview of common drug screening methodologies with a focus on urine drug screens and their use in clinical practice. Finally, a series-based case study will be presented to facilitate learner application of urine drug screens to the patient with substance use disorder. 

1. Provide an overview of common drug screening modalities and their clinical application
2. Review point-of-care urine drug screens available and common drugs tested
3. Provide a basic overview of opioid and benzodiazepine drug metabolism as it relates to drug screening
4. Review Confirmatory testing and its functionality compared to point-of-care testing
5. Review case studies involving urine drug screening, clinical implications, and resultant patient care
