2026 Fall DeVos Medical Ethics Colloquy

This session will examine how artificial intelligence is moving quickly from experimentation to routine use in health care, including clinical documentation, clinical summarization, administrative workflows, and decision support. This session examines ethical challenges that arise when AI tools are integrated into patient care and organizational practice. Dr. Danton Char will address generative AI tools for clinical summarization, including risks related to accuracy, automation bias, transparency, equity, workflow, and workforce effects. Dr. Alex London will address the organizational responsibilities required for responsible AI, with attention to governance, accountability, leadership, procurement, testing, implementation, and monitoring. Together, the session will help participants move from general concern about AI ethics to practical methods for evaluating and governing AI in health care settings.

1. Recognize how AI-generated clinical content may affect nursing practice, patient safety, documentation quality, and clinician vigilance.
2. Describe one practice change that could improve review, monitoring, or escalation of concerns about AI-generated clinical documentation.
3. Identify one organizational action that would strengthen responsible AI governance, accountability, or communication within a health care setting.
