Autonomy, Self Determination and Ethical Considerations in Health Care

Ethical dilemmas are a daily part of practice when it comes to Health Care. This training will explore the concepts of Autonomy and Self-Determination and how they often conflict with other principals within the healthcare setting, such as Beneficence (Benefit patients) and Non-Maleficence (do no harm) and will look at how Temporizing can impact Autonomy and Self-determination in patients. We will explore skills needed to assert autonomy and self-determination while discussing case studies that highlight the ethical dilemmas that medical professionals must deal with in the practice of patient care. This training will highlight the importance of medical ethics and provide skills that medical professionals can use to help manage these concerns.

1. Recognize the importance of self-determination and informed consent in the medical field from a human rights perspective.
2. Define informed consent and temporizing, and their application to self-determination.
3. Develop critical thinking skills and how to apply them to practice.

Corewell Health West is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the Wisconsin Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
