Overview
This presentation discusses acute and chronic pain in children and adolescents. Undefined problems of pain are reviewed. The impact of pain on children and adolescents are defined by the negative cycle of pain, physiologic, biologic, psychological and social factors. This activity discusses how these factors impact patient’s school functioning and every day life. The presentation will educate RN care managers on how to address the impact of pain on children and adolescents and assist families with education and resources on school avoidance.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Define pain and the impact on children and adolescents
  2. Define undefined symptoms of pain and somatic symptom disorder
  3. Identify the negative impacts of pain on school functioning
  4. Define and educate on school avoidance
  5. Discuss how to partner with family and treatment team to support children with chronic pain in school
