Overview
Nurses spend more time with patients and families facing the end of life than any other health professionals. Nurses are intimately involved in all aspects of end-of-life care and they address the myriad of needs facing individuals at this time of life. Expert nursing care has the potential to greatly reduce the burden and distress of those facing life's end and the ability to offer support for the many physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of patients and their families. Nurses, individually and collectively, have over the past decades demonstrated commitment to end-of-life care. A pediatric specific ELNEC training course was conceptualized in September 2001. ELNEC (Pediatric Version) was piloted in June 2002 in Chapel Hill, NC, bringing together 20 pediatric palliative care experts. The ELNEC Pediatric curriculum was developed from this pilot course. The curriculum consists of nine modules specific to care of children facing life-threatening illness and their families. The ELNEC Pediatric curriculum also includes several common themes integrated throughout. These major themes include: The family as the unit of care. The important role of the nurse as advocate. The importance of culture as an influence in palliative care. The critical need for attention to special populations such as ethnic minorities, the poor, and the uninsured. End-of-life/palliative care issues impact all systems of care across all settings. Critical financial issues influence palliative care. Palliative care is not confined to cancer or AIDS, but rather it is essential across all life threatening illnesses and in cases of sudden death. Interdisciplinary care is essential for quality care in palliative care and at the end of life.

ANCC Learning Outcomes
At the conclusion of this activity, learners will be able to:

  1. Participants will have a better understanding of pediatric palliative care
  2. Participants will have a better understanding of pediatric hospice
  3. Participants will have a greater understanding of assessing and managing symptoms
  4. Participants will gain a greater ability for key components of palliative care including: communication, cultural/spiritual considerations, ethical/legal issues
